Introduction:
The None of the Above (NOTA) option was introduced by the Election Commission of India (ECI) on the direction of Supreme Court in PUCL vs UOI judgment (Sept 2013). It was first used in 2013 legislative assembly elections held in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi. It was introduced to protect the secrecy of voter’s choice who intends not to vote for either of the candidates.
Significance of NOTA:

Voter Empowerment: NOTA empowers the voters to express their disapproval of all the contesting candidates.
