Answer :
Spiritual primacy is the central theme of Vivekananda’s teachings, through which human beings can succeed in every sphere of their lives. He urges people, especially the youth, to never let go of reason. Through his revolutionary ideas, he inspired youth not only in India but worldwide. He also stressed the need for the youth to lead a responsible and dutiful life.
Relevance of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings for youth:
- Physical quest: By this, he meant taking care of the human body and activities to mitigate physical suffering. According to him, youth can lead a successful life only when they are physically fit. This becomes important as lifestyle-induced health issues are gripping even young people today.
- Spiritual quest: According to Swami Vivekananda infinite power is in the soul of man and each soul is potentially divine. The goal of human beings should be to manifest this divinity within, which can be done by controlling one’s own nature both externally and internally.
- Religious acceptance: Swami Vivekananda’s idea of peace and religious acceptance was global and included people of all sects and religions. His message broke through the shackles of caste and creed and emphasised universal brotherhood. These ideas are relevant for youth in the face of growing hate speech and division in society.
- Education: Among the various ways Swami Vivekananda suggested to rebuild Indian society, education was the primary means for empowering the people and youth of the country. For him, education meant secular learning that built character and instilled human values in students. Unfortunately, today’s education is focused on rote learning. Gaining true education, as defined by Vivekanand, would help the youth of today to excel in various fields.
- Faith in oneself: He emphasises that the ideal of faith in ourselves is of the greatest help to us as “whatever you think, that you will be. If you think yourselves weak, weak you will be; if you think yourselves strong, strong you will be.” One has to know that all knowledge, power, purity, and freedom are in oneself.
Therefore, what Swami Vivekananda wanted from the youth were the ‘muscles of iron’ and ‘nerves of steel’. It’s high time that the youth of India come forward and channelise their energy and enthusiasm to shape the country’s future on the ideals of his teachings.
