Introduction:
The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal forum that brings together the leading industrialised nations of the world. The Group was established as a platform for economic and financial cooperation in response to the 1973 energy crisis.
Members of G7: Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, UK and USA. The European Union (EU) also participates in the Group and is represented at the summits by the President of the European Council and the President of the European Commission.
Need for G7 to revamp itself:
Over the years the G7 has come under significant criticism and needs to revamp itself in order to stay relevant in the contemporary world order.

G7 remains an exclusive and closed group of major advanced & industrialised countries of the world. It needs to be more inclusive and needs to add more members especially from the Global South.

In recent decades G7 has become outdated and ineffective as it does not reflect the changing world order. It excludes two of the world’s largest economies and most populated countries i.e. India and China.

Lack of cooperation within the G7 members on different issues like sanctioning Russian oil & gas imports, tackling climate change etc.

The combined share of its members in global GDP has fallen from 50% in 1970s to 30% in 2018. This has led to calls for a more representative global governance structure.

Establishment of G20 in response to 2008 financial crisis proved the G7’s inability to handle-modern day crises. G20 is a more inclusive forum as it covers a higher share of world’s economy and also accounts for two-thirds of the world population, compared to only 10% in G7 countries.
The time is right for the G7 to reconfigure itself into G7+ to include a common Euro-zone representative and make space for India, China & Brazil, thereby better reflecting the current global economic landscape in terms of both GDP and population.
Significance of G7 for India:
India’s position in relation to the West is rising thanks to its economic growth and its geopolitical role as a “swing state”. The deepening geopolitical tensions with Beijing, the imperatives of restructuring the global economic order to reduce dependence on China, and the need for the US & Europe to reconnect with the Global South have all created the conditions for a new strategic compact between India and the West. G7 holds great importance for India.

G7 provides a forum to India for strengthening its relations with the world’s leading economies. This opens new avenues for trade and investment.

It provides a platform to help India transform into a global mediator, a manager of the region, and a mobilizer against the looming threat from China.
