Model Answer:
Education is a process of gaining knowledge and developing critical & rational thinking. Values, on the other hand, are enduring qualities/standards of behaviour which guide people’s behaviour. Value inculcation is an inherent aspect of education. A value-based education aims to provide students with the moral compass they need to succeed in the real world. Students benefit from learning to think critically and practically via value education so they may develop positive character traits and become productive citizens.
Values are inculcated in students through:
- Knowledge and information about the great personalities like Buddha, and Gandhiji in books.
- Teachers serve as role models to students in school and play a major role in inculcating their ethical behaviour. Teacher-student interaction/relation leads to the inculcation of values such as respect, discipline, integrity, dedication, responsibility, self-esteem, truth and tolerance.
- Various extra-curricular activities in schools and colleges and peer-to-peer interaction lead to the development of values like sharing, caring, compassion, and cooperation.
Why values-based education is the foundation for the character traits in society?
- Promotes trustworthiness: Value-based education inculcates good values, such as honesty, compassion, responsibility, etc. Over the period, good values help in building good character. A person with good character is trusted and appreciated by others. This promotes good interpersonal and trustworthy relations.
- Encourages reflective attitude: Value-based education provides a successful environment for teaching and learning of a full range of academic, social, and interpersonal skills. It encourages reflective and inspirational attributes and attitudes. The students can be nurtured to help people, discover the very best of themselves which enables them to be good global citizens.
- Sense of satisfaction: When a person has a good values system, he/she will feel content even though they may not be as successful in life or a career. E.g., selflessness is about acting without any motive & personal interest. It is an act of ‘Nishkaam Karma’ i.e., do your duty, do not seek fruits. It brings happiness in life through satisfaction.
- Development of self: Through value-based education, students develop a secure sense of ‘Self’. They become more empowered to take responsibility for their own learning. They develop rational trust. They become articulate and able to talk freely and well through silence and quietude in a value-based framework.
- Standards of behaviour in public life: Human values learned/promoted through education set the minimum and maximum standar ds of behaviour in public life. E.g., if a person witnesses an accident on the road the values of empathy and compassion will lead him to take the injured person to the hospital.
Nelson Mandela said that “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Value-based education is considered a solution to all major problems in society, such as adolescent delinquency, drug consumption, crimes against women, etc. In today’s time, when there is a huge crisis of moral values in society, through value-based education, we can develop children into people with strong character and values who know how to utilize their knowledge for the advantage of mankind.

मूल्य आधारित शिक्षा समाज में चारित्रिक गुणों की नींव क्यों है?
- विश्वसनीयता को बढ़ावा देता है: मूल्य-आधारित शिक्षा ईमानदारी, करुणा, जिम्मेदारी आदि जैसे अच्छे मूल्यों को मन में बैठाती है। समय के साथ, अच्छे संस्कार अच्छे चरित्र के निर्माण में मदद करते हैं। अच्छे चरित्र वाले व्यक्ति पर दूसरों द्वारा विश्वास किया जाता है और उसकी सराहना की जाती है। यह अच्छे अंतर वैयक्तिक और भरोसेमंद संबंधों को बढ़ावा देता है।

नेल्सन मंडेला ने कहा था कि "शिक्षा सबसे शक्तिशाली हथियार है, जिसका उपयोग आप दुनिया को बदलने के लिए कर सकते हैं।" मूल्य आधारित शिक्षा को समाज की सभी प्रमुख समस्याओं का समाधान माना जाता है, जैसे किशोर अपराध, नशीली दवाओं का सेवन, महिलाओं के खिलाफ अपराध आदि। आज के समय में जब समाज में नैतिक मूल्यों का बहुत बड़ा संकट है, मूल्य आधारित शिक्षा के माध्यम से, हम बच्चों को मजबूत चरित्र और मूल्यों वाले लोगों के रूप में विकसित कर सकते हैं, जो जानते हैं कि मानव जाति के लाभ के लिए अपने ज्ञान का उपयोग कैसे करना है।
