• Bauxite is an important ore used for making aluminum.
• It is an oxide of aluminum.
• It is a rock consisting hydrated aluminum oxides.
• The deposits occur as caps on hills and plateaus, except in coastal areas.

HOW IS OF ALUMINUM PRODUCED FROM BAUXITE?

• This industry is divided into 2 parts:

1. The plants for obtaining alumina from bauxite ore near bauxite mines.
2. Plants for reduction of Alumina into Aluminum, near the cheap source of electricity.

WHAT ARE ITS USES?

• Metallurgy: For the extraction of Aluminum from Bauxite.
• In Industries like chemical, cement, steel, and petrol etc.
• In building material and roads with Lateritic bauxite.
• Paper making
• Water purifying
• Petroleum refining

• Odisha has for 52 % of Bauxite
• Andhra Pradesh 18 %
• Gujarat 7 %
• Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra 5 % each
• Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand 4 % each.
