Chief Information Commission (CIC)
WHAT IS CHIEF INFORMATION COMMISSION (CIC)?
- It is an independent body established in 2005.
- Established under the RTI Act, 2005.
WHAT IS RTI ACT?
- The Right to Information Act sets out the rules and procedures regarding citizens’ right to Information.
- It is a fundamental right.
COMPOSITION OF CIC
- Chief Information Commissioner + Members (not more than 10).
- They shall not hold any Office of Profit or not associated with any Political Party.
HOW ARE THEY APPOINTED?
- Appointed by President on selection committee.
- Committee consists of PM, Leader of Opposition and a Cabinet Minister.
WHAT IS THE TENURE OF THE MEMBERS?
- Hold office until attain the age of 65 years.
- Not eligible for reappointment
WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF CIC?
- Inquire into a complaint from any person regarding information requested under RTI Act, 2005.
- Can order inquiry into any matter on reasonable grounds.
- May examine any record under the control of the public authority.
- Annual Report submission to the Central Government.
WHAT IS STATE INFORMATION COMMISSION?
- It was also constituted under RTI Act in 2005 by the State government.
- Composition State Chief Information Commissioner + Members ( not more
- than 10).
- Appointment: By Governor
