WHAT IS CHIEF INFORMATION COMMISSION (CIC)?

  • It is an independent body established in 2005.
  • Established under the RTI Act, 2005.

 

WHAT IS RTI ACT?

  • The Right to Information Act sets out the rules and procedures regarding citizens’ right to Information.
  • It is a fundamental right.

COMPOSITION OF CIC

  • Chief Information Commissioner + Members (not more than 10).
  • They shall not hold any Office of Profit or not associated with any Political Party.

HOW ARE THEY APPOINTED?

  • Appointed by President on selection committee.
  • Committee consists of PM, Leader of Opposition and a Cabinet Minister.

WHAT IS THE TENURE OF THE MEMBERS?

  • Hold office until attain the age of 65 years.
  • Not eligible for reappointment

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS OF CIC?

  • Inquire into a complaint from any person regarding information requested under RTI Act, 2005.
  • Can order inquiry into any matter on reasonable grounds.
  • May examine any record under the control of the public authority.
  • Annual Report submission to the Central Government.

  • It was also constituted under RTI Act in 2005 by the State government.
  • Composition State Chief Information Commissioner + Members ( not more
