- In simple words, earthquake means the shaking of earth/ land.
- It is a natural hazard.
- Seismograph is used to measure earthquakes.
WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF EARTHQUAKES?
- The occurrence of a severe earthquakes is limited to few regions of the world.
- These are caused due to the tectonic movements of the earth.
- The energy released forces waves to travel in all directions.
- The point where energy is released is called the Focus.
- The point on the earth, vertically above the focus is called the Epicentre.

WHAT ARE THE TYPES OF EARTHQUAKES?
- Tectonic earthquakes: It is most common and caused by the movement of tectonic plates on the earth’s crust.
- Explosion earthquakes: Artificial factors like high density nuclear explosions are its primary causes.
- Volcanic earthquake: Earthquakes produced by stress in rocks due to the withdrawal of magma.
- Collapse earthquake: This type occurs in underground mines due to the pressure generated within the rocks.
